Penduluming, a form of dowsing, is an accurate method of divination (receiving answers from the Universe, Higher Self, Collective Unconscious, etc.).
Pendulum dowsing is performed by asking a Yes, or No answerable question, while holding a small weighted object, attached to a chain, suspended in the air in front of you.
The weight will move in either, a direction that has been established as a Yes answer, a direction established as a No answer, or stand still, giving a neutral answer.
If the pendulum shows a neutral answer, the question may not be answered by a simple Yes, or No, or the answer is not determinable at the moment, due to concerns around the question still being in flux.
Choosing Your Pendulum
Pendulums can be made from various materials, such as crystal (natural stone), wood, or metal attached to a chain, or more simply a ring, or paper clip on a thread.
Pendulums can be purchased from New Age and Rock shops, or on the internet, and come in varied shapes, sizes, and materials. Personally, I prefer a crystal pendulum, shaped like a slender, single-terminated, crystal point.
When choosing a pendulum in person, try out the selection to find one that you are attracted to, and more importantly, moves freely for you, because this one, indeed, wants to go home with you. Hint: the pendulum intended for you, may not be the prettiest one of the selection.
Clearing Your Pendulum
When home with your new pendulum, clear it as you would any crystal, or divination tool. Pendulums, like all objects, tend to take on the energetic imprint of those who have handled them.
There are various recommended methods of clearing pendulums, as listed below. Whichever method you choose to use, just be sure to express the intention that any energy, other than you own, attached to the pendulum leave it, and go down into the Earth to be grounded there:
- Rinse your pendulum under a running faucet, while careful not to drop it down a drain!
- Pass your pendulum back-and-forth through a lit candle’s flame, 3 times.
- Pass your pendulum back-and-forth through the smoke of burning incense, 3 times. Sandalwood is preferred, but not an absolute, here.
- Pass your pendulum back-and-forth through the smoke of burning Sage, 3 times. Personally, I refrain from using burning Sage indoors, due to its God awful smell!
- Bury your pendulum in sea salt, for a day.
- Place your pendulum on a piece of Selenite crystal, for a day.
- If you are at least a Reiki 2 Practitioner, and therefore attuned to the Reiki 2 symbols, draw the Reiki Clearing symbol over your pendulum, and recite the symbol’s name, 3 times.
Important Note: You can leave your pendulum in the moonlight, or sunlight for charging it with Universal energies. However, if your pendulum is made of crystal, do NOT leave it in the sunlight, the sunlight will fade its color! I speaketh from personal experience.
Programming Your Pendulum
Programming your pendulum is super important, so that your pendulum will know what you recognize as a Yes answer vs a No answer, and therefore, you will know what the heck, your pendulum is telling you! Lol.
- Hold your pendulum to your 3rd Eye (your forehead between your eyebrows) and state the intention that it will always give you accurate answers.
- Suspend your pendulum in front of you, and move it in your desired Yes direction, while stating, “Show me a Yes answer this way.”
- Suspend your pendulum in front of you, and move it in your desired No direction, while stating, “Show me a No answer this way.”
- Then state that you intend that this program, for this pendulum, will not change until you, and you only change it. This will insure that if someone else picks up your pendulum, the program will not change to their personal program for a Yes, or No answer’s movement.
As far as Yes/No answer directions, I prefer a forward-and-backward movement for a Yes answer, and a side-to-side movement for a No answer, like the typical head movements for these answers.
I prefer these Yes/No directions, due to the fact that I have many pendulums, some I use for Yes/No questions, and others I use for diagnosing Chakras, with an entirely different program.
I program my Chakra diagnostic pendulums to show me a balanced Chakra as clockwise, an unbalanced Chakra as counter-clockwise, and a weak Chakra as just back-and-forth.
Some Pendulum Dowsers, believe you should ask the pendulum to show you its preferred Yes, and its preferred No answer directions. However, to avoid confusion, I program my pendulums to my own program.
I want all of my Yes/No pendulums to have the same program, and all of my Chakra diagnostic pendulums to have the same program. And I do not mix the two purposes; meaning I use each of my pendulums only for the one purpose I originally programed it for.
Using Your Pendulum
Many Dowsing resources instruct that the pendulum should be held by the far end of the chain, but my instructions differ.
I, and most anyone using a pendulum professionally, gather up the excess chain in my palm, and choke the chain about an inch from the pendulum’s weighted object. I hold the chain between my index finger and thumb, which are pointed downward.
I have trained with several well-known Dowsers, who teach this method, and I find that the pendulum begins to move quicker, and with more momentum, if held close to its weighted object, than if it’s held at the far end of the chain. A longer length of chain restricts and slows the movement of the pendulum, as does a Dowser’s hand that is held too still.
This is not brain surgery; therefore it is not productive to make an effort to hold your hand absolutely still. If the pendulum is reluctant to move for you, give it a jiggle to get it started. It will then take the direction of the correct answer.
Don’t be discouraged if your new pendulum exhibits little, or slow movement when you begin to practice with it. It can take as long as a year of frequent use, for you, and your new pendulum, to connect, and become “one.”

Other Uses for Pendulums
One renowned Dowser, Raymon Grace, of Virginia, uses his pendulum to dowse things most would never think of. Besides Yes/No questions, he dowses for mineral deposits and energetic formations beneath the Earth’s crust, and for disembodied entities attached to people, buildings, and geographical locations. Grace also infuses bodies of water with drops of bottled water he’s treated with his pendulum, for the purpose of healing the Planet.
Even more impressive, Grace uses his pendulum for healing health issues in people. First, he spins his pendulum counter-clockwise over the body part to remove the issue, while pointing to the Earth with his opposite hand.
Then he spins his pendulum clock-wise to infuse positive energy into the cleared body part, while pointing to the sky with his opposite hand.
I’ve been fortunate enough to witness Grace performing his pendulum healing method, and the confirmation of its immediate effectiveness by his healing recipients.
The common, and not so common uses for a pendulum discussed here is, by far, not an exhaustive list. The ways in which to use your pendulum is only limited by your own imagination.
I hope you will seek out, and practice with one (or more) of these beautiful tools of divination, to answer your most heartfelt questions.
